When is Open Payments data published and updated?
CMS publishes each year's Open Payments data by June 30 of the following year, after companies report and doctors have a chance to review it, and refreshes the published data each January.
What a program year is
A program year is a calendar year of payments, from 1 January to 31 December. Payments made in 2025 are program year 2025, and they are published in 2026. Every figure on this site is shown with its program year, because a number without one cannot be interpreted.
The yearly calendar
| When | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1 January – 31 December | Companies collect data on payments made during the program year. |
| By the 90th day of the next year (about 31 March) | Companies submit that year's data to CMS. |
| 1 April – 15 May | Doctors and teaching hospitals review the records and can dispute them. |
| 16 May – 30 May | Companies correct disputed records. |
| By 30 June | CMS publishes the program year. |
| January | CMS refreshes the published data with later corrections and disputes. |

How far back the data goes
Reporting began with payments from August 2013, first published in September 2014. CMS keeps the most recent program years in its search tool — currently 2019 to 2025 — and moves older years to archived datasets, which can still be downloaded.
What this means for figures on this site
The latest program year on this site is 2025. We load each new publication after CMS releases it, so a doctor's or company's figures change once a year, and occasionally after a January refresh.
- A payment appears the June after the year it was made — payments made in 2026 are published by 30 June 2027.
- A figure can change after publication if a dispute is resolved.
- When you quote a figure, quote the program year with it.
