The data
Everything on this site comes from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services under the Open Payments program, established by the Physician Payments Sunshine Act.
What is in it
- General payments — consulting fees, speaking payments, travel, meals, gifts, royalties.
- Research payments — funding tied to a named study. Overwhelmingly paid to institutions rather than individuals.
- Ownership interests — a physician’s ownership or investment stake in a manufacturer.
How often it changes
CMS publishes annually. Every figure on this site is tied to a program year, and that year is always shown beside it, because a figure without its year cannot be interpreted. There is no “updated just now” here — it would be false.
What it does not cover
Only manufacturers of products reimbursable by Medicare, Medicaid or CHIP must report, and only payments above a reporting threshold. A clinician with no record here may simply never have been reported on. An absent payment is not evidence of an absent relationship.
